ArchivalResource

Selected congregational records of the American Lutheran Church in Minnesota [microform]. 1800-1988.

Selected congregational records from individual congregations belonging to the American Lutheran Church with a strong emphasis on Norwegian churches in Minnesota. Records from other states are also available, including Wisconsin, Ohio, Illinois, New York, Texas, Florida, Washington State, Idaho, and Oregon. Congregational records were originally maintained and organized by and for local congregations and consist of ministerial records (pastoral acts) such as baptisms, confirmations, marriages, burials, funerals, day registers, communions, pastoral journals, and membership lists. Membership records typically include family registries but also include more detailed baptismal, marriage, and funeral records. Other congregational records available are congregational minutes, church council minutes, Luther League minutes, Ladies Aid minutes, and youth group minutes. Minutes often include congregational histories, constitutions, articles of incorporation, letters of call, correspondence, anniversary booklets and programs, and newspaper clippings. Some financial records, legal documents and parish newsletters are present. There are also records from a few Swedish Lutheran churches.
